Vyshyvanka Blouse and Shirt for a Couple, Slobozhanshchyna

A luxurious pair of vyshyvankas — a vyshyvanka blouse and a men’s shirt from the “Preserved Heritage” collection — serves as a model and the result of the designer Oksana Polonets’ research work. The vyshyvankas are created based on traditional embroidered ornaments of the ethnographic region of Slobozhanshchyna. Decorative stripes along all the seams and the Tree of Life placed on the back of the sleeve are hallmarks of traditional embroidered shirts from the Luhansk region of the 19th century and carry deep protective symbolism.

The men’s linen vyshyvanka shirt features a modern semi-fitted silhouette. The embroidered stripes along all the seams and sleeves, alternating red and blue colors, recreate ancient joining techniques—zmereshchuvannia (drawn-thread work)—and symbolize love and respect for Ukrainian traditions. This is how embroidery was traditionally done in Slobozhanshchyna.
