The Polissya embroidered shirt in the ‘Echo’ collection: archaic traditions and contemporary fashion
Polissya embroidered shirts: traditional clothing made from natural fabrics
Polissia is often described as the most traditional region of Ukraine. Ancient forms of clothing, weaving techniques and embroidery have been preserved here. The traditional costume of Polissia is characterised by a subdued colour palette, with white and red predominating, as well as the use of exclusively natural materials.
The collection is based on linen and hemp fabrics. It is these materials that have also defined the ‘ECHO’ collection. Natural linen, hemp and nettle not only allow us to recreate the aesthetic of the authentic vyshyvanka, but also to highlight their natural qualities and refined texture. For example, our white embroidered hemp dress offers absolute comfort and harmony.
Ornaments of Polissya: the geometry of ancient symbols
A distinctive feature of Polissya embroidery is the prevalence of geometric patterns. In the traditional patterns of Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Volyn and Rivne regions, one can see diamonds, crosses, broken lines, stepped compositions and other symbols which, in Ukrainian culture, are associated with protection, fertility, the continuation of the family line and harmony with the world.
A variety of techniques are used to decorate embroidered shirts: zanyzuvannya, zavolikannya, zapolch, zernovy vidiv, meretka and other methods that imitate weaving. This is precisely why Polissya embroidery has a distinctive texture and striking graphic quality. In the ‘ECHO’ collection, the POLONETS team has reimagined traditional motifs, retaining their symbolism and characteristic geometry. The patterns have taken on a contemporary feel on women’s embroidered blouses, whilst remaining recognisable as bearers of Polissya culture.
White and red — the colours of the Polissya heritage
It is impossible to imagine Polissya embroidered shirts without the combination of white fabric and red embroidery. It is precisely this contrasting yet understated colour scheme that has become one of the region’s defining features.
In the ‘ECHO’ collection, this combination forms the basis of the artistic concept. Red patterns on light-coloured natural fabrics create an elegant look that reflects a connection between tradition and contemporary aesthetics.
The traditional costume of Polissya as a source of inspiration
The collection was inspired by individual elements of traditional Polissya attire. White linen shirts with geometric embroidery, woven belts, skirts with ornamental stripes and the characteristic layering of the garments are all reflected in the brand’s designs.
In the new collection, traditional forms are transformed into contemporary ethnic dresses, women’s shirts and men’s linen embroidered shirts. The clean silhouettes allow the focus to be on the beauty of the natural materials and the expressiveness of the patterns. The collection was born out of a desire to reinterpret the cultural heritage of Polissya and express it through the language of contemporary fashion, creating a harmonious dialogue between the past and the present.
Accessories in the collection: twill silk ribbon, belts and embroidered pockets
To complement an outfit from the ‘ECHO’ collection or to harmoniously refresh other classic pieces in your wardrobe, we have created a range of unique accessories. Embroidered belts, decorative detachable pockets and silk twill ribbons pair perfectly with our garments.
It is the twill scarf—a narrow silk scarf that serves a multitude of stylistic purposes—that is particularly popular. Many people worry that the scarf will constantly come undone and fall off (especially from the hair). However, thanks to the special diagonal ‘twill’ weave, the natural silk holds the knot perfectly, does not slip and does not come undone on its own. Furthermore, it is the ideal status gift, as the twilli comes in branded packaging. Such a gift will attract attention and demonstrate respect and good taste.
How to wear tweed: 5 ideas for a stylish look
A twilly is an accessory that offers endless styling possibilities. The more options you have, the more interesting your wardrobe becomes. Here are the 5 most popular ways to style this scarf:
- A classic bow tie — the perfect alternative to a necklace, which looks stunning under a shirt collar.
- Hair braiding — a romantic touch to a plait or ponytail.
- Bag handle covers — an instant way to refresh your favourite accessory and protect the handles from wear and tear.
- Instead of a belt — thread a twill scarf through the belt loops of your trousers or jeans for a vibrant summer accent.
- A wrist bracelet — a lightweight option for everyday looks.
Add this vibrant accent to a linen blouse or your favourite black dress, and your outfit will take on a whole new look!
